These tree service contractors have met the requirements for registration as a tree service provider. They also have obtained a permit authorizing operation of equipment in the right-of-way (cannot impede vehicular or pedestrian traffic, and must have insurance and take precautions to assure pedestrian safety). There is currently no fee for tree permits, but fees may be assessed if heavy equipment must be staged in the right of way, or if there is a need for a traffic control plan review.

See if the firm you wish to hire is not listed as service provider, please have them contact us, so we may assist them in obtaining the registration required to obtain a permit.

Please note: Tree Service Registration or an Annual Equipment Permit does not allow a tree service to work on street trees without first obtaining a tree pruning/removal permit from the SDOT Arborists Office.

Info for Property Owners / Property Managers

Major pruning work or removal of street trees requires a permit. Only firms that are registered with the SDOT will be issued permits for street tree work. The work they perform must be done in accordance with the City's guidelines and specifications as outlined in the Street Tree Manual.

A copy of the issued permit must be available on site when the work is taking place.

If you are planning to have work done on your street trees, you, the property owner, should refer to the Planting Trees in the Planting Strip (CAM 2304) Client Assistance Memo for instructions on how to care for trees that are located in the planting strip.

Info for Tree Service Providers

To be a registered tree service provider, you must submit a Tree Service Provider Registration Application to the Seattle Department of Transportation, along with a copy of:

1. Washington State Contractor License
2. City of Seattle Business License
3. Certificate of Insurance, with City of Seattle listed as additional insured
4. Current Annual Equipment permit number(s).

All firms must also agree to follow guidelines established by the Seattle Street Tree Ordinance (SMC 15.43); The Street Tree Manual, The Seattle Traffic Control Manual and the ANSI A300 Standards for tree care.

As the permittee, you will be responsible for ensuring that pruning and other tree work complies with all ANSI 300 standards.
