Othello and Rainier Beach Healthy Street
Updated December 1, 2023
What's Happening Now?
As part of the permanent Othello and Rainier Beach Healthy Street, we will be installing additional safety enhancements at two locations, and local artist Damon Brown will create a mural installation! To explore the updated designs, see the “Othello and Rainier Beach Healthy Street Design” section below.
In addition, we are now accepting planter requests for the Othello and Rainier Beach Healthy Street! Please sign up using our planter request form. For permanent Healthy Street locations, neighbors can elect to replace the standard concrete sign base with planters. SDOT will install planters at Healthy Street intersections based on the requests we receive from neighbors. Neighbors who request planters are responsible for maintaining the planter after installation. For more information about adopting planters and planter maintenance, visit the Healthy Street Planters webpage.
Upgraded Temporary Sign Bases
This winter, we'll be upgrading the temporary sign bases at key intersections along the Othello/Rainier Beach Healthy Street to more durable concrete cylinders. The existing temporary signage has not been durable enough to withstand winter traffic conditions and as a result, our crews were overwhelmed last year with numerous daily requests to repair and replace signage all over the city. These temporary sign bases will be replaced when permanent planter boxes and concrete sign bases are installed.
Example of an upgraded temporary sign base from the Central District Healthy Street.
