Gas Pipe Licensing

What Is It?

A gas piping mechanic license allows you to install gas piping from the meter to the appliance or to the point of use.

When you get your license, remember that:

  • You must renew your license each year. You can renew and pay for trade licenses online.
  • You have up to one year after your license expires to renew your license. After one year you will need to retake the exam to reinstate your license.
  • You must obtain your license within 90 days of passing the test.

The Exam

Our exam will test you on general, code, and licensing knowledge related to gas piping. It is an open book, multiple-choice test. You need a score of at least 70 percent to pass the test. You need to supply your own printed copy of the International Fuel Gas Code and Seattle amendments. You will not be able to refer to an electronic copy during the online exam. 

If you need help in your native language to complete the exam, you can bring an interpreter or translation device with you.

Steps to Get Your License

  1. Read the law and learn the requirements for prequalification. You can buy the International Fuel Gas Code and Seattle Amendments from the International Code Council.
  2. Review the trade license requirements in the code.
  3. Submit an application through the Seattle Services Portal.
  4. Submit an affidavit, through the Seattle Services Portal, with proof that you have:
    • Either 6 months experience as a gas piping mechanic or an unlicensed worker supervised by a gas piping mechanic, or a combination of the two
    • A certificate of completion from a board-approved gas piping mechanic class
    • A valid plumber’s license
  5. Once your application is approved, SDCI will send you an email with a link and instructions for how to take an online exam. Complete the exam.
  6. Pay for your license.
