Rainier Playfield was originally named Columbia Playfield, which was then the name of the pioneer town in the vicinity. In 1928, upon petition on behalf of the Rainier Business Men’s Club, the name was changed to Rainier in appreciation of the field's mountain view.

The construction of the All-Star Legacy Project - Rainier Playfield Improvements has begun and will continue until March 2024. Watch this site for more information about the ribbon cutting celebration on March 23 in conjunction with Rainier Little League. The project goal is to create two new synthetic turf infields and dugout and bench improvements funded by the Seattle Mariners in anticipation of Seattle hosting the 2024 All-Star Baseball game. Approximately $1,350,000 in funding is donated by the Seattle Mariners.
